Ph. D. Mathematics Education

Program Description

The Mathematics Education Doctoral Program focuses on original research in many areas of mathematics education. The Mathematics Education Program prepares students for research and teaching in a context that is rigorous, collegial, and cooperative.

The following are guidelines for the creation of a Program of Study for the Mathematics Education doctoral degree. These guidelines comprise only a portion of the requirements necessary to earn a doctoral degree in Mathematics Education.

Research and Dissertation (42 semester hours, minimum)

  • Foundations of Educational Research
    • Qualitative Studies in Education
    • Behavioral Methods I & II
    • Evaluation & Supervision of Instruction
    • 30 Hours of Research & Dissertation
    • ?

     

    • Foundations (12 semester hours, minimum)
    • Advanced Educational Psychology
    • Constructivism in Education
    • Schooling in American Society
    • Education of Exceptional Learners
    • Cognitive Processes & Educational Practice

     

    Concentration (27 semester hours, minimum)

    • Advanced Curriculum and Instruction in Mathematics
    • Advanced Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics
    • Research in Mathematics Education
    • Research in Teacher Education
    • Other courses

     

    Cognate (12 semester hours, minimum)

    • Any Mathematics course approved for graduate credit

Admission Information

To be considered for the doctoral program in Mathematics Education, a student must:

  • Possess a master's degree
  • Qualify for admission to the Graduate School
  • 3.0 Grade Point Average
  • Submit 3 letters of reference
  • Complete an interview with the Mathematics Education program faculty
  • Submit a current vita
  • Submit a writing sample of scholarly work
